The National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP), commonly referred to in English as the Nazi Party, was the far-right political party in Germany which was active between 1920 – 1945, and created the ideology of National Socialism.

The NSDAP included several paramilitary organization which supported Nazi ideology and were required to become Nazi Party member.  Some exceptions were the Waffen-SS, which was considered the military arm of the SS and the NSDAP, which allowed recruits to enlist without joining the Nazi Party.  In addition, Police officers including members of the Gestapo, were likewise not required to be members of the party.
