Schutzmannschaft Brief History
The Schutzmannschaft (or Schuma) was an auxiliary police force formed by SS leader Heinrich Himmler in July 1941 to support German occupation in the Soviet Union and Baltic states. Though officially under the Ordnungspolizei, it operated mainly under the SS, working closely with security forces in anti-partisan actions and population control.
Many units assisted in Holocaust operations, including mass shootings and deportations. Some battalions, like the Schutzmannschaft-Brigade Siegling, were integrated with SS personnel and absorbed into the Waffen-SS. Ultimately, the Schutzmannschaft served as an extension of the SS, playing a major role in Nazi policies and atrocities in Eastern Europe.
