Waffen-SS Totenkopf EM/NCOs Collar Tab

An original Waffen-SS Totenkopf EM/NCOs collar tab, constructed in white cotton machine embroidered on black wool base. The obverse of the collar depicts the classic “Deaf Heads” skull and cross bones. The reverse of the collar tab has typical Dachau-style construction, with black cloth folded back over tan buckram, with white stitching. The collar has a small moth on the top edge, other in good condition.

Brief History Waffen-SS Totenkopf Division

The Waffen-SS Totenkopf Division, later known as the 3rd SS Panzer Division “Totenkopf”, was formed in October 1939, drawing heavily from SS-Totenkopfverbände concentration camp guard units and SS-Heimwehr Danzig personnel. Commanded initially by Theodor Eicke, the division first saw major combat during the 1940 campaign in France, where it quickly gained a reputation for aggressive fighting and was also implicated in war crimes, including the massacre of surrendered British prisoners at Le Paradis. From 1941, Totenkopf fought on the Eastern Front as part of Army Group North, seeing severe action around Leningrad and later in the Demyansk Pocket. After heavy losses, it was rebuilt as a panzergrenadier and then panzer division, fighting at Kharkov, Kursk, Hungary, and Austria. The remnants of the division surrendered to American forces in May 1945 before many were transferred to Soviet custody.
