The accompanying presentation case is covered in black leatherette and embossed with a silver Merit Cross. It is fitted with a metal hinge and catch, while the interior is lined with white rayon to the lid and black felt to the base. War Merit Cross 1st Class Without Swords

The War Merit Cross, 1st Class without Swords was instituted in October 1939 and awarded for exceptional non-combatant service that contributed to the war effort. Recipients would normally have first received the 2nd Class. The silver-coloured, pin-backed decoration was worn on the left breast pocket and, unlike the combatant version, did not feature crossed swords. It remained in use throughout the Second World War and was produced by numerous authorised manufacturers.
